"The universe" is all that exists (time & space) following the/our big bang. That encompasses and is limited to all WE can see.
There is no law requiring that "our" big bang and all it created was a unique event.
If others occurred, they didn't occur anywhere within "our" universe and in "our" time, but, like describing certain quantum events, the restrictions in our understanding and subsequent language with which to explain them does not mean they are impossible.

What is impossible is impossible. There is no Santa Claus because he is impossible.
The universe is infinitely big so you don't need a multiverse. Given that every expression of matter has to exist ( infinite universe/ finite number of combinations of matter) there is an exact replica of me getting a blow job from Gillian Anderson who is going to fire a gun on ejaculation putting a bullet in the last Millwall fan. That's literally happening now an infinite amount of times. Who needs Santa?

So that means, in a universe far, far away, Father Christmas exists, Gank is neither sexist or racist, Rodfarts is knocking one out over Noble and Payet is lifting the Champions league trophy for West Ham Utd.

It depends how you define 'big' in the context of a secret.
Is it the secret known by the fewest people?
Or the secret unknown to the fewest people?
Or the most important piece of information not widely known?

Biggest secret in the world is one shared by ALL the British press who for some reason WANT England fans portrayed as a bunch of yobs who like nothing more than smashing everything up wherever they go in the world.
The big secret is that it's a self-perpetuating myth. There are many, many films glorifying English hooligans which leads to every other country's yobs planning attacks for the kudos which leads to the English retaliating which leads to more media stories saying how mindless they are. Then the whole sorry wheel turns again.
I'm sure that if a dirty southern French bunch of Ultras fired flares into a pub mobbed with Germans or those happy-go-lucky Irish you'd see much the same sort of violence.
English football fans get about the same deal from the media that Paedophiles do and it's time media outlets took some time telling how this kind of violence starts. Just report the stuff honestly, that's all we can ask.

I often wonder what they'd discover and profit from if they threw as much money at exploring the depths of the ocean as they have done in exploring our universe and beyond.

I see what you are doing but I think it's more subtle than that. I reckon they are seeing strong evidence of life on the some of the planets they are finding but it's freaking them out a bit. They've convinced themselves they must be making a mistake somehow and are going to look into it a lot more closely. But I think a small group of scientists have at there fingertips the proof that life is ubiquitous. The reason they are not telling anyone is they've convinced themselves they are wrong and if one if they do they will become the main act in the biggest circus in history. And if they are wrong they will never work again and will be a laughing stock.
